It’s been another week and another episode in our lovely Linux saga! This week’s show covered our experiences and thoughts on Xubuntu 19.10, as well as some chat about being positive in the community, with some extra pizzaz! You can watch the stream archive on YouTube here! https://youtu.be/Tcb2lLVBKBw

There will also be an audio version available here!

This week’s distro challenge is elementary OS 5.1! elementary OS is a “fast, open, and privacy-respecting replacement for Windows and macOS”. With a focus on a consistent and intuitive user experience, elementary OS exhumes its own, bespoke presence of elegance and beauty.

elementary OS utilizes a “Pay What You Want” model for software purchases/downloads. When downloading the ISO, you can choose to buy the ISO for any price, even if that price is 0. No matter what you choose, you’ll still recieve the full elementary OS experience. You are encouraged to use the torrent if possible, which reduces the strain on download servers, and makes downloads faster for other awesome users like yourself! Please give it a try at your convenience and let us know what you think, here in the chat, or on the livestream next week!

Some things I suggest you check out in this release of elementary OS are as follows!

  1. The greeter (login/lock screen) has been changed! elementary OS now comes with the new elementary Greeter; based on LightDM and designed with function and form in mind. This fixes a lot of bugs that were present in earlier releases!
  2. There’s now an Onboarding experience! When you first get into elementary OS, there’s now a handy little application that walks you through some of the basic (but very useful) things you may want to use! Housekeeping is something you should definitely try out
  3. Flatpak support in elementary OS has landed! You can now install Flatpaks quite easily in your user environment with Sideload! If there’s an application you’d like a new version of or perhaps is missing from the base repositories, you can simply download a Flatpak and install it opening it! Sideload will take care of setting up the Flatpak repo and dependencies on its own! This also enables you to see everything from that repo in AppCenter after a reboot, to make things easier for you in the future!
  4. 5.1 Hera now features a newer version of the Linux kernel and graphics stacks thanks to the fantstic work done by the Ubuntu desktop and kernel teams! Existing installations of elementary OS updating to 5.1 can enable the HWE stack manually if you need/want to by doing the following in a terminal:
    sudo apt install --install-recommends linux-generic-hwe-18.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-18.04
    And then reboot. You’re set!

We’re excited to announce that, if all goes to plan, we will be graced with the presence of two of the fantastic members of the elementary OS core team; founder Daniel Foré and co-founder Cassidy James Blaede!

If you need any help, have any questions, or just wanna chat, I’ll be happy to answer anything I can and point you in the right direction to find the answers or resources you need! I am only one person, so I may not answer right away, but I’ll do my best to get to your questions/comments as quickly and accurately as possible!

Notice how the wallpaper is spanned across two monitors. It will hold this without fail, even after many reboots!

Quick note about the Elementary OS reviews that are incoming on the next BDLL:
While I’m not unrecommending doing so, remember that the Elementary OS Team has all rights reserved to say that applications that work by having system tray indicators, of which are not supported on Pantheon by default, have not been tested by Elementary for integration with the desktop and are therefore mostly a problem at the application’s developer’s side way more than it is their own.

/!\ Some curated applications use an alternative type of indicator that works in Pantheon by default, IIRC, however these applications are exempt from this whole thought about Pantheon not supporting standard system tray icons by default.

I don’t really accept that as a good answer but understand your point.
